Composition & What It Treats
Active Ingredients (per 5 ml):
Chlorpheniramine maleate – antihistamine (2 mg)
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide – cough suppressant (10 mg)
Primary Uses:
Suppression of dry, non-productive cough
Relief from allergy-related symptoms (e.g. sneezing, runny nose, throat irritation)
—
⚙️ How It Works
Dextromethorphan depresses the brain’s cough center, reducing coughing reflex
Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine, alleviating allergy symptoms like sneezing and runny nose
—
👶 Dosage Guidelines (Typical)
Adults & adolescents (13 + years): 5–10 ml every 6 hours, up to 7 days
Children 2–12 years: Usually half the adult dose (e.g. 5 ml every 6 hours), but only if prescribed by a doctor
Note: Use exactly as directed; do not exceed recommended dose—overdose can lead to respiratory depression, coma, seizures
—
⚠️ Common Side Effects
Drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation
Stomach upset, nausea, headache, abdominal discomfort, fatigue
—
🚨 Serious Risks & Precautions
Overdose may cause dangerously slow breathing, pale/blue lips, seizures, coma—seek immediate medical help
Avoid using with MAO inhibitors or serotonergic drugs (e.g., phenelzine, selegiline, SSRIs) due to the risk of serotonin syndrome
Not recommended (or used with caution) in:
Children under 2 years
Patients with asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis
Those with glaucoma, enlarged prostate, urinary retention, or phenylketonuria, fructose intolerance
Use caution if pregnant, breastfeeding, or having liver/kidney disease
Avoid alcohol—can worsen drowsiness and sedation
—
🕒 When & How to Use
1. Shake well before dosing.
2. Can be taken with or without food, but maintain consistency.
3. Use measuring cup for accurate dosing.
4. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.
5. Drink plenty of fluids to help soothe throat and hydration
6. Finish full course unless a doctor advises otherwise—don’t stop early or increase dose. If symptoms linger longer than 7 days or worsen (e.g. fever, rash, headache), consult a doctor
—
💊 Drug Interactions
Serious with MAO inhibitors (e.g., linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, rasagiline): risk of serotonin syndrome
Can interact with SSRIs, antipsychotics → increased drowsiness or other side effects
—
💡 Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, preferably below 30 °C. Keep out of reach of children
