Itromed 100mg Capsule belongs to a group of medicines called antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of fungi and is used to treat infections of the mouth, throat, vagina, and other parts of the body including fingernails and toenails. It kills fungi by destroying the fungal cell membrane.

What It Is

  • Oral antifungal medication containing 100 mg itraconazole, a triazole class drug that blocks ergosterol synthesis—essential for fungal cell membranes—leading to fungal death

Uses

Prescribed for a variety of fungal infections, including:

  • Skin and nail infections (tinea, onychomycosis)

  • Oral/vaginal candidiasis (“thrush”)

  • Systemic infections like blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, cryptococcal infections (in immunocompromised patients)

Dosage & Administration

  • Take 100 mg capsule with food for optimal absorption

  • Frequency and duration depend on the infection:

    • Skin: several weeks

    • Nails: often months

    • Systemic: as prescribed by your doctor

  • Swallow whole—do not crush or chew

  • Complete full course to prevent recurrence/resistance

Side Effects

Common (usually mild):

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue

  • Occasional rash or itching.

Serious (less frequent):

  • Elevated liver enzymes, liver toxicity

  • QT prolongation (heart rhythm effects), congestive heart failure

  • Rare neuropathy (tingling/numbness)

  • Vision or hearing changes


Precautions & Warnings

  • Liver or kidney dysfunction: use with caution; doctor may monitor labs

  • Heart disease: avoid in patients with heart failure or those on QT-prolonging medication

  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: contraindicated or only if benefits outweigh risks; pregnancy is advised against

  • Driving/Machinery operation: may impair due to potential dizziness or blurred vision


Drug & Food Interactions

  • Antacids/acid reducers: reduce absorption—take at least 2 hours apart .

  • Multiple drug interactions: especially with CYP3A4-metabolized medications—include statins, benzodiazepines, antiarrhythmics, and more

  • Alcohol: may worsen side effects; avoid during therapy
