Uses

Prescribed for treating many bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis)

• Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) infections (otitis media, pharyngitis/tonsillitis)

• Skin and soft-tissue infections, dental abscesses, gum ulcers

• Urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis

• Stomach infections like H. pylori (as part of combination therapy), typhoid fever

• Even some cases of bacterial endocarditis and gonorrhea

How It Works

Amoxicillin kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, causing bacterial lysis and halting infection progression.

Dosage & Administration

• Prescription-only medicine.

• Typically taken twice daily, with or without food—though food may reduce stomach upset. Maintain even intervals.

• Swallow the capsule whole—do not crush or chew.

• Always complete the full course as prescribed—even if symptoms improve.

Side Effects & Precautions

Common side effects:

• Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort

• Skin rash, headache, dizziness

Less common/serious:

• Tooth discoloration (mainly in children), joint pain, fever, convulsions

• Allergic reactions (hives, swelling, difficulty breathing)—seek immediate help

Precautions:

• Use caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment; dose adjustment may be required.

• Can reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives; use alternative birth control methods.

• May interfere with urine sugar tests; evaluate if results are unclear

• Use with caution in patients with glandular fever—rashes may result.

Alcohol & Driving

• Generally safe with alcohol; however, alcohol may worsen side effects like nausea or dizziness.

• If you experience dizziness or confusion, avoid driving or operating machinery.
